Artist Andy Warhol became famous for revealing fine art in practical objects like soup cans. Today some museums are following Warhol’s lead and putting their storage areas and systems on display. At the soon-to-open Broad museum in Los Angeles, director and chief curator Joanne Heyler queried, “How in a building can we make it clear to visitors that storage and conservation are a core part of a museum’s function?” Her answer: Let them see the storage racks.
For design afficionados, this trend comes as no surprise. Modern museum storage is a remarkable combination of efficiency, adaptability, and craftsmanship – it’s definitely a work of art worthy of display.
